Choose the right size PC case [Top]

Like laptops, desktop PCs now come in all shapes and sizes. Traditional towers are still popular because they offer the most room for expansion. But space-saving small-form-factor PCs are now available for home users, as are component-style cases that more seamlessly integrate media PCs into your living room.

  • Small-form-factor (SFF)
Small-form-factor (SFF) PCs, whilst not exactly portable, are still compact enough to be moved occasionally--some CPUs even have handles on top. Internal expansion is still limited, but with the latest processors, full-size graphics cards for 3D gaming, and USB 2.0 and FireWire ports, you’ll never miss out.
  • All-in-one
Popularized by the iMac, the all-in-one is a desktop PC with a TFT attached. The desktop components (processor, memory, hard drive, etc) may be located in the base or hidden behind the TFT display. Like a SFF desktop, an all-in-one limits expansion, but many boast advanced features, such as DVD burners and digital TV tuners.
  • Living-room-friendly case
With PCs assuming more and more home entertainment duties, you’ll find various styles and designs perfect for the living room. Some can accommodate only half-height expansion cards, which means the lower end for graphics cards, but in general, you'll get plenty of external expansion, as well as a sleek, smart style.
  • Mid-tower case
The box no longer has to be beige, but the basic design of the tried-and-tested mid-tower case remains the same: several internal and external drive bays, PCI Express and regular PCI slots for expansion, and a long list of ports on the front and the back for connecting peripherals such as digital cameras and MP3 players.
  • Full-tower case
If you're a serious speed junkie, then this is the ultimate choice. The interior space allows for plenty of expansion, with many internal and external bays for both optical drives and hard drives. It should also include a x16 PCI Express slot or two for high-end 3D gaming cards, as well as at least five PCI or x1 PCI Express slots.

Choose the right processor and memory

Desktop Type

AMD Athlon 64 processor

Budget or Family computing

These single core chips are still available in lower-end PCs, and are all-round solid performers.

AMD Athlon 64FX processor

AMD's high-end dual-core processors are fast, and if you purchase a PC with one today, it will last you for a long time.

AMD Athlon 64X2 processor

Budget to performance

The advantage of Athlon X2 processors lies in the energy efficient editions that are easy to cool and nearly as powerful as their full-wattage counterparts.

AMD Sempron processor

Single-core budget chips in lower-end desktops.

Intel Celeron D

Single-core budget chips in lower-end desktops.

Intel Core SoloIntel Core Duo

Budget or mainstream

Available in single-core (Core Solo) and dual-core (Core Duo) versions, these are fast, power-efficient, solid performers, especially for small-form-factor desktop designs. You should get fast, extended use from a PC with one of these processors in it.

Intel Core Duo 2

Budget or mainstream

These dual-core chips are fast enough for most day-to-day computing tasks, often found in lower-end PCs.

Pentium D

Budget or mainstream

These dual-core chips are fast enough for most day-to-day computing tasks, often found in lower-end PCs.

Computer Memory

Every PC comes equipped with a certain amount of physical memory, usually referred to as RAM (Random Access Memory). Computers store running applications and data using the RAM. The greater the RAM, the faster your PC will run. Many desktop PCs allow you the option to upgrade memory via expansion slots, usually located at the rear of the PC.

Microsoft recommends a minimum of 512MB to run Windows Vista, but doubling that amount is well worth the added expense. Memory isn't nearly as expensive as it once was, which makes going with at least 1GB the right decision for most PC buyers.

Upgrade your PC

Your existing desktop PC can usually be upgraded by utilising the expansion slots at the rear of the PC. It’s often an affordable way to improve the performance of an existing PC without having to replace all the components. From compact PC cases and low-cost cables to the latest motherboards and advanced memory, Misco offers a full range of top class PC components at low, low prices.

Choose your system graphics [Top]

For basic computing tasks, such as e-mail, browsing the Web, and giving the occasional photo slide show, at least in Windows XP, you can get away with an integrated graphics card. If your video needs go beyond the basics, however, or if you have designs on Windows Vista, you'll be better choosing a dedicated graphics card with its own graphics memory. Gamers, digital media creators, home-theatre-PC fans, and anyone who wants to use more than two monitors will all benefit from adding a dedicated graphics card.

Find the drive to succeed

The type of drive in a desktop PC will determine the type of disc you can use with it. Each disc can hold a different amount of data. Some drives will only read discs while others will also record. With all CD and DVD drives, the speed of the drive is also given. This determines how fast information can be played or recorded to the disc. Some Desktops may have more than one of each drive.

Optical drives

CD ROM drive
Only reads CDs. Holds the same as 1000 floppy discs or approximately 100 MP3 files or 1000 images from a digital camera (at medium resolution).

DVD ROM drive
Plays DVDs and CDs. A DVD holds as much as 12,000 floppy discs. Enough for approximately 1200 MP3 files.

CD RW drive
Plays and records CDs.

DVD RW drive
Plays DVDs and CDs and also records DVDs and CDs.

DVD dual layer
Records double the amount of storage compared to a standard DVD recorder drive 9.4GB versus 4.7GB.

Dual format DVD recording
Records both plus (+) and (-) formats. Allowing you total recording flexibility to be compatible with all types of DVD players.

LightScribe drive
Burn pictures or write directly onto the back of your disc for easy labelling.

Blu-ray drive
Sony’s Blu-ray drives are capable of storing 25GB of data (or 50GB on dual-layer discs).

HD-DVD drive
HD-DVD was developed by Toshiba, and its discs store 15GB of data (30GB on dual-layer discs). By comparison, a typical single-layer DVD is 4.7GB.

Hard drives
Measured in Gigabytes (GB), this is where your PC stores information. Desktop PC hard drives usually start at around 80GB but the greater the capacity the better. This is particularly true if you plan to use programs that use a lot of disc space such as image applications or plan to store large files such as photos, MP3 files, or videos.

Pick the right computer accessories [Top]

Choosing the best components for inside your PC case is only half the battle. You’ll also need to choose suitable computer accessories that complement the type of system assembling or purchasing.

TFT Monitors
You’ll find a fantastic range of TFT monitors at Misco. From low cost, 17" savers to widescreen wonders with DVI connectivity, Misco have all the top brands at unbelievably low prices.

For basic audio, you'll need to choose a TFT with integrated stereo speakers or a cheap two-piece set. If you have any appreciation for music, look for a 2.1 set at the very least. The number 2.1 refers to the two satellite speakers and the one subwoofer. If DVDs are your thing, a 5.1 (or better) speaker system will give you amazing surround sound – also perfect for gamers!

Keyboards & Mice
The wireless revolution has spread to keyboards and mice. Now you can find wireless varieties of each, often powered by rechargeable batteries. Goodbye wires and mess, hello comfort and freedom of movement. Mouse functionality these days goes far beyond mere right and left clicks. A scroll wheel has become a necessity for comfortable Web scrolling. Buttons hidden on the side where your thumb rests often let you jump forward and backward between Web pages. A more important development over the years has been the optical mouse offering greater accuracy and it won't get clogged up with dirt and dust.

Finally, you’re going to need a printer to work alongside your new PC. Whether you’re looking to print out the latest party snaps or simply make photocopies for your latest assignment, Misco have an extensive range of printers to suit all budgets and applications. From the latest photo printers to the all singing, all dancing multifunction all-rounders, Misco stock the top brands at the lowest prices. For help finding the right printer, visit our printer buying guide.
